I'm breaking my own rules here a bit; All Her Engines is meant to mainly be a process/work blog for my art alone. However, two events have occurred recently that call for an upset in the order of things.

One: My incredibly/ridiculously talented friend Cary Nord has started a sketchblog.

Two: I saw David Hoffos's "Scenes from The House Dream" at ACAD's Illingworth Kerr Gallery. Seriously the greatest/most astounding show I've ever seen there, including all those seen in the four years when I was a student and made it out to every single one that had free food at their gallery opening. >.> It's running until December 17th, so make sure you catch it!

FFWD Weekly - Nov 3rd Edition!

Over in Vancouver for the weekend; it's been a long time in coming, but going to visit a lot of artist friends (Kat Brechtel, Eran Cantrell, and Terry Lynn Massey, among others). I haven't been in this city since I was 16, but so far I approve based on their ratio of late-night pizza places that have sesame seeds on the crust.

Halloween costume 2011! My take on Pamela Isley a.k.a. Poison Ivy. A first time for me uploading, but in all honesty it's the first one in a while I've actively constructed and not just thrown together a few nights before.

All sewn by hand. Well, except the boots, maybe. And the wig. Eye makeup initial idea was mine, but improved a thousand fold by Val at MAC.

Second piece in the series on Chilean Folk music/Songs of Violeta Parra; this is the drawn portion. Visual representation on "Rin Del Angelito", a song about the "Velorio del Angelito" funerary practice in southern Chile.

Info: the "Wake of the Little Angel" as it roughly translates to, is where infants who die are mourned as angels and sit as guests of honour on the table presiding over the funeral. Some other Latin American countries have similar customs.

Self Portrait/Mask Sketches, pt.2

The second part of the self-portrait project, we were charged with replicating traditional media techniques in photoshop so as to make digital images that don't have that cheeze wiz look to them...a noble goal, frankly.

I decided to play with the same transition idea, but with a slightly different image this time around; all brushes made by me in photoshop from various traditional ink/wet media strokes; the "paper" effect was done with digital collage. I had fun with this one. ^^

Most recent piece (by which, you'll notice I'm leaving some things out...really, better that way >.>); continuing animatic for a music video treatment/short film idea for the Final Fantasy song "The Butcher"; I'm probably going to focus on this idea for the rest of the semester and make it my final piece, since its something that I've seriously wanted to make for a while now.

Here's another one; dance loops made in ToonBoom using both Stop-motion frames and Bezier Curves. Made me wish for the rotoscoping again, actually, since the network setup on this one was a billionty times more complicated. Bill Dyer, ToonBoom Tech extraordinaire and animator over at Kevin Kurytnik's studio, saved my life on this one, no lie.

Seems I've forgotten that the short animations/learning projects we've been doing in VSCH 416 could constitute "sketches"...so here we go.

First animation post! Small rotoscoping test of a clip from the movie "Memento" directed by Chris Nolan.

For the uninitiated, rotoscoping is the tedious, deadly, and painful process of taking live footage and drawing over EVERY FRIGGING FRAME in order to create smooth movement; looking back at this, I totally should've done it on twos instead of ones...less eye-vibrating that way.

I actually wouldn't mind going back and finishing the scene when I've actually got a minute; liked the high-contrast look.

Done for a camera test animation for VSCH 416, but also as a lighting/enviro sketch for my process book. Basic concept is a re-imaging of the stories of both Theseus vs. The Minotaur and Icarus in a steampunk-Greek fantasy world. Funtimes.

Got some feedback from Rick Sealock (visiting professor) on monday, which I will be applying...mainly, beating it up a bit to make it look like its been through more battles, maybe including some remnants of previous fighters...that sort of thing. Some blood wouldn't be amiss, either. *grins*

*EDIT: just realized that I misspelled "minotaur" in the title when posting this...how tired/drunk was I? (Only not really, since I don't drink) O_o Wtf?

Final Horseman; Goodbye Realism

Final version of the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow. With this, I bid a fond adieu to attempts at realism (well, partially...colour-realism, anyway); it seems rather silly to cut my veins trying to imitate life closely when there's people out there who already do it way better. Frankly, I find I enjoy more derivative work anyway, so I'm going to focus on the areas where I seem to have something going.

Did that sound whiney? Sorry, wan't meant to be...just me embracing the fact that I can do things that are more natural to me without it being some gigantic sin.

Because DA is a pit of fail (which we've known for ages, but just pretended didn't matter...the fingers-in-the-ears approach has failed, however). Therefore, while I try to figure out how to make head-or-tail out of flash and build an actually GOOD website, this will have to do.

That said, this should update more often than a site would, anyway. XD

The title of this blog was, temporarily, "Draw in Hell" (punny), but I figured this might make it easier to find on the interbutts. Function vs fun. Ah well...
